The Mentoring component provides “Real World” experiences that provide the motivation necessary for success in school, the workplace and in life. Students are paired with professionals, college students and peer leaders to develop social, cultural and educational skills. Changing Destinations: Journey To Excellence Inc. serves as a channel to create and strengthen partnerships with higher education institutions, K-12 school districts, communities, businesses, families and other funders who are working to increase opportunities for students.

Youth Peer Mentoring

Peer mentoring program matches high school students with middle school students. Through this special relationship, peer mentors provide advice and support and serve as role models for younger people who need help. Mentors assist their mentees with school, social, family and other typical issues of growing up. Peer mentoring relationships are designed to provide opportunities for both mentors and mentees to develop in key areas: Competence, Confidence, Connection, Character, Caring and Compassion.

Professional For A Day Mentoring

Students have the opportunity to shadow celebrities and other professionals for a day to see what the "typical work day" is like for someone in his/her desired career. Students gain valuable experience and insight into the world of work through direct observation, hands on activities, and close engagement with their mentors. Job shadowing also helps students determine if their career of interest is the best option for them. The mentoring program not only inspires young people but also provides the students with work readiness skills, exposure to professional workplace attire, etiquette, and confidence. Our collaboration with educators, industry and community partners provide additional supplemental educational opportunities for high school students. Students learn how to conduct themselves during business parties, sports outings, and networking and other social events.

College Internship Mentoring

In collaboration with local colleges and universities, college interns are paired with high school students to motivate them to stay in school, work hard, and graduate ready to succeed in higher education. The student advisors challenge and support high school students by helping them navigate the “college system” through academic advising, mentoring, college and career planning, college visits, placement testing, and financial aid planning.
