The 2020 Youth Engagement Leadership Development (YELD) Global Citizens Summit is an annual program which brings youth locally and internationally together who are making a difference in their communities and around the world.


YELD Global Citizens will be invited to join the Global Citizens Academy, 7-day global education tour to New York City and the Washington, DC Metro area Joined by members of the Changing Destinations staff and Community Partners.


During the Summit, international youth will attend classes with their peers from the United States. Youth will also visit cultural sites, local businesses, social change organizations, and government agencies. 


Training sessions will focus on cultural awareness and proficiency, advocacy, and innovation as it relates to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Students will return to their communities to complete a year-long, real-world project in collaboration with (using technology tools) their peers in the United States. 

When - September 2020


Application Requirements


  • Applicants must submit a recommendation letter from a teacher, school administrator, or community leader to be considered for the YELD Global Citizens Scholarship.

  • Applicants must submit a 2-3-minute video​

  • ​​Applicants must also respond to two short answer questions, up to 250 words each (If selected for the second round​).

  • Applications close Sunday, May 31, 2020 11:59 PM EDT.

  •  Link to application will be provided for applications who move to the second round.


Trip Includes


  • Pre- and post-trip learning sessions (virtually and in-person)

  • Orientation

  • Training Sessions and guest speakers

  • Entertainment

  • All trip-related meals

  • Lodging and ground transportation during trip


Eligibility Requirements


  • Ages 12-18 (by time of application)

  • Limited past overseas travel

Note: Students from low-income households and those with limited or not travel exposure will be given preference in the selection process.

Youth develop the drive to actively seek opportunities to improve the world around them, and are empowered to create innovate solutions to real issues in the world.

Youth from minority and underrepresented communities are strongly encouraged to apply.
